Chair Talk 3.9 Early Thanksgiving
One of the things I get to do as Chair of the Faculty is participate in Honorary Degree ceremonies. Last Friday the UA awarded a Doctorate to Edward Villella, arguably the most important American male ballet dancer ever. In recent years he has become a friend of the UA, coming often to teach our students. I participated in the ceremony, met the man himself, and watched a video outlining his life's accomplishments. How inspiring it must be to our students to have the opportunity to work with this living legend -- it will change the lives of most of them.
Another thing I get to do is be privy to many of the not-so-good parts of the UA universe. Like all non-utopian universes, ours has its share of good and bad.
At the ceremony, and the dance performance later that evening, I couldn't help thinking that this is why, occasional negatives notwithstanding, I remain proud to be a faculty member at the UA. A close-up look at our outstanding dance program is just one of many such oases of excellence you can find in every corner of the UA. This remains true as Presidents and Provosts come and go, as evidenced by the outstanding new faculty we are able to hire, year after year. The faculty who will cultivate the oases of the future.
This may be my last message before Thanksgiving break, so I want to use the moment to remind everyone that, all the BS aside, this is a special place, that goes its own way, and it is that way because we collectively make it so.

Walking back from the dance theater we passed Flandrau, open and on display – the deep mysteries of the universe. We passed lots of students. The campus was full with life, and that is something to be thankful for.
